Snow Lake Trek (Biafo Hispar Traverse Trek)

Snow Lake Trek (Biafo Hispar Traverse)

Central Karakoram / Gilgit-Baltistan — 5,151m

Known locally as Lukpe Lawo, Snow Lake is a vast high-altitude basin of ice and snow sitting at 4,870 meters deep in the Central Karakoram Range. Spanning over 16 square kilometers, this icy wilderness is fed by massive glaciers radiating in every direction, forming one of the longest non-polar glacial systems on Earth when combined with the Biafo Glacier (67 km) and Hispar Glacier (49 km).

Crossing the Hispar La (5,151m) links the ancient Kingdom of Baltistan (Askole) with the Hunza Valley (Hispar/Nagar), following the legendary high-altitude traverse pioneered by Martin Conway in 1892 and later explored by Eric Shipton.

Q1: What permits and logistics are required for the Snow Lake / Biafo Hispar Traverse?
A: Because Snow Lake passes through restricted border zones and Central Karakoram National Park, foreign trekkers require a Trekking Visa, an official NOC / Restricted Area Permit issued by the Tourism Department, and must be accompanied by a licensed mountain guide through a registered tour operator.
Q2: How difficult is the Snow Lake Trek compared to K2 Base Camp or Gondogoro La?
A: Snow Lake is rated Strenuous to Extreme. It is more isolated than K2 Base Camp, with multi-day stretches walking entirely over snow and crevassed glacier systems above 4,500 meters. Rope team protocols and glacier safety gear are essential.
Q3: Is technical climbing gear required for crossing Hispar La (5,151m)?
A: While technical ice climbing is not required, safety gear is mandatory: climbing harnesses, ropes, carabiners, ice axes, and crampons are required for traversing crevassed snowfields on Snow Lake and descending Hispar La safely.
Q4: Can this trek be done in reverse (Hunza to Baltistan)?
A: Yes. The traverse can be done from Hispar (Nagar) to Askole (Baltistan), but starting from Baltistan (Askole) is widely preferred because the gradient climbing up the Biafo Glacier allows for more gradual, safe high-altitude acclimatization.
