Drifka Peak Expedition

Drifka Peak Expedition

Nangma / Charakusa Valley — 6,447m

Drifka Peak (6,447m), also written as Drifika or Drefekal, is an elegant, technically demanding granite and ice summit rising deep within the Masherbrum range of Baltistan. Accessible via both the Charakusa Glacier and the granite spires of the Nangma Valley near Kanday, Drifka is widely regarded as one of the finest and most aesthetic technical 6,000-meter objectives in the Karakoram.

First climbed in 1978 by a Japanese expedition led by Akiya Ishimura, Drifka Peak offers an intense alpine experience combining glacier approach, steep couloirs, and technical mixed climbing along sharp snow-and-ice ridges. Its vantage point provides breathtaking, close-up panoramas of neighboring giants, including K6 (7,281m), K7 (6,934m), Amin Brakk (5,850m), and the distant Baltoro peaks. We offer complete full-service Base Camp logistics — including official permit processing, Islamabad-to-Kanday/Hushe road transfers, local Balti high-altitude porters, kitchen staff, and full Base Camp infrastructure.

Route & Climbing History: The standard climbing line via the South/South-West route leads out of the upper valley pastures onto the steep glaciers feeding the peak. The route involves sustained fixed-line work over 45°–55° snow slopes, technical bergschrund navigation, and mixed alpine ridges up to the summit crest.

Climbing grade: Technical high-altitude alpine climb (AD+/TD / 45°–55° snow/ice & mixed rock) — multi-day glacier approach, steep snow-and-ice ridges, and fixed-line climbing over high-exposure terrain. Designed for competent, experienced climbers.

Q2: Who made the first ascent of Drifka Peak?
A: The peak was first summitted in 1978 by a Japanese expedition led by Akiya Ishimura. In May 2023, Italian climber Giovanni Zaccaria achieved a notable alpine-style first ascent on the south face/southwest spur and made a ski descent down the peak.
Q3: How difficult is the climb on Drifka Peak?
A: Drifka Peak is rated AD+/TD for alpine climbing. It is a technical objective requiring proficiency in crampon technique, ice axe navigation, fixed-rope ascension on 45°–55° snow/ice slopes, bergschrund crossings, and mixed rock climbing.
