Bondit Peak Expedition

Bondit Peak Expedition

Kanday Valley / Masherbrum Range — 5950m

Bondit Peak, rising to approximately 5950 meters, is situated in the remote Bondit Valley near Kanday in the Karakoram of northern Pakistan. Surrounded by impressive high mountains, the peak offers a genuine wilderness experience away from the more frequently visited trekking routes. From the Bondit Valley region, climbers are positioned close to some of the great giants of the Karakoram, including K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrum group.

The approach to Bondit Base Camp is relatively short compared with many major Karakoram expeditions, but the climb itself demands strong mountaineering skills, good acclimatization, and the ability to operate safely at high altitude. This expedition is designed for experienced climbers looking for a challenging 6,500m Karakoram peak and an opportunity to explore a less-traveled part of Gilgit-Baltistan.

ondit Peak, standing at roughly 5,980 meters in the Karakoram range of Pakistan, remained unclimbed for decades despite multiple attempts by international expeditions. Early efforts by New Zealand, Japanese, and Korean teams—including a 2015 Korean attempt that was turned back at 5,200 meters—all failed due to the peak’s complex, heavily crevassed glaciers, high avalanche risks, and severe weather.
The historic first ascent was finally achieved on July 20, 2022, by a three-man expedition from the Hungarian National Alpine Team, consisting of Viktor Ágoston, László Szász, and Bence Kerekes. Operating in a strict, self-sufficient alpine style without high-altitude porters or fixed base camp staff, the team successfully navigated a highly technical route up the northeast spur. They braved a 1,500-meter wall of ice and snow with slopes tilting up to 80 degrees, ultimately conquering the mountain and establishing a new technical route (graded TD WI4) in the Karakoram history books.

Q2: What peaks are visible from the Bondit Peak region?
A: Climbers in the Bondit Valley and on the higher slopes of Bondit Peak are positioned near major Karakoram giants, enjoying views of Masherbrum (K1), K2, Broad Peak, the Gasherbrum group, and the granite spires of the adjacent Nangma Valley.
Q3: How difficult is the climb on Bondit Peak?
A: Bondit Peak is a demanding 6,500m high-altitude objective requiring strong mountaineering skills, glacier navigation, fixed-rope technique, and proper acclimatization. It features 45° to 50° snow and ice slopes alongside mixed alpine sections.
