Ultar Sar Expedition

South Ridge / Hunza Wall — 7,388m

Ultar Sar (7,388m), also known as Ultar Peak, is the southeasternmost peak of the Batura Muztagh sub-range in the Karakoram. Rising directly above Karimabad in the Hunza Valley, Ultar Sar features one of the most sheer vertical reliefs in the world, plummeting over 5,000 meters straight down to the valley floor.

Widely regarded by high-altitude alpinists as one of the ultimate tests in mountain sports, Ultar Sar presents severe objective hazards, relentless technical rock and ice, and extreme avalanche exposure. What we offer is complete Base Camp logistics support — Islamabad-to-Base-Camp transport, government permits, local porter management, a dedicated Liaison Officer, kitchen crew, and Base Camp infrastructure — for world-class alpine teams equipped to attempt this legendary peak.

Route & Climbing History: Ultar Sar was historically one of the most notorious unclimbed 7,000m peaks in the world, rejecting dozens of international expeditions due to catastrophic avalanche risk and technical rock walls. The mountain was first successfully summitted on July 11, 1996, by a Japanese expedition led by Akihira Hasegawa (summiteers: Yamazaki Akihito and Matsuoka Kiyoshi) via the Southwest Ridge. It remains extraordinarily dangerous and infrequently summitted.

Climbing grade: Extreme high-altitude mixed and alpine climbing (ED+/ABO) — continuous steep ice, vertical rock bands above 6,000m, acute avalanche paths, and high exposure. Intended strictly for elite, world-class technical climbers.

Q1: Where is Ultar Sar located and what is its height?
A: Ultar Sar (also written as Ultar Peak or Ultar II) stands at an elevation of 7,388 meters (24,239 feet). It is located in the Batura Muztagh sub-range of the Karakoram in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan, rising directly above Karimabad in the Hunza Valley.
Q2: Who first climbed Ultar Sar and when was it summitted?
A: Ultar Sar was first summitted on July 11, 1996, by Japanese mountaineers Yamazaki Akihito and Matsuoka Kiyoshi from an expedition led by Akihira Hasegawa. They successfully climbed the mountain via the Southwest Ridge after decades of failed international attempts.
Q3: Why is Ultar Sar considered one of the most dangerous peaks in the Karakoram?
A: Ultar Sar is infamous for extreme avalanche risk, falling ice seracs, severe rockfall, and unrelenting technical pitch climbing. Because the mountain rises thousands of meters near-vertically above Hunza, warming temperatures trigger massive snow slides, making timing and route choice exceptionally risky.
Q4: How much does an Ultar Sar climbing permit cost and how do you apply for an NOC?
A: Official climbing permits and royalty fees for Ultar Sar are managed by the Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department and the Ministry of Tourism in Pakistan. Foreign mountaineers must secure Non-Objection Certificates (NOC), visa support, and an official Liaison Officer (LO). Tour operators like Skardu Expedition Treks and Tours handle all permit processing 60 to 90 days prior to arrival.
Q5: What is the best month to climb Ultar Sar in Hunza?
A: The primary window for climbing Ultar Sar is early summer, specifically late June through July. Climbers often rely on colder night temperatures to stabilize ice and snow hazards on the steep faces before summer heat increases avalanche potential.
Q6: What climbing experience is required for an Ultar Sar expedition package?
A: Ultar Sar requires elite technical alpine credentials. Climbers must have extensive, proven experience on severe alpine mixed routes (ED/ED+), steep ice walls, 6,000m–7,000m high-altitude peaks, avalanche assessment, and unassisted alpine-style survival skills.
Q7: How long is the trek to Ultar Sar Base Camp from Karimabad?
A: The trek to Ultar Base Camp (Ultar Meadow / Hon Pass approach at ~3,800m) is one of the shortest base camp approaches in Pakistan, taking only 4 to 5 hours of steep hiking up the Ultar Gorge directly from Karimabad village in Hunza.
